Abbotsbury Swannery offers a rare and tranquil outdoor experience unlike anywhere else in the world.
Tucked away on the edge of the Fleet Lagoon, just a short distance from the Jurassic Coast, it’s home to the only managed colony of nesting Mute Swans in existence. Over 600 free-flying swans gather here each year to nest, raise their young, and glide across the calm, shallow waters of the lagoon.
The setting is peaceful and scenic, with sweeping views, natural beauty, and the gentle sound of swans moving gracefully through the water. Visitors can walk through the heart of the colony, soaking up the atmosphere of a site that has been in continuous use for centuries. The Swannery is open from mid-March to the end of October, making it a perfect stop on spring or summer days out in Dorset.

A place where nature and history meet
The origins of the Swannery stretch back to the 11th century when Benedictine monks first began managing the swans. Although the monastery is long gone, the tradition continues. Today, the Swannery is part of a wider protected nature reserve, where history and wildlife are closely connected.
The swans choose to return year after year to nest, drawn in by the peaceful surroundings and the abundance of eelgrass in the lagoon. While nesting season begins in spring, with cygnets starting to hatch in May – visitors during this time may just be lucky enough to see fluffy grey cygnets up close – a highlight for families and nature lovers.

Enjoy activities, trails and hands-on wildlife moments
The Swannery is one of the most family-friendly things to do in Dorset. Children can take part in feeding sessions at noon and 4pm, where wheelbarrows of food are brought out and shared with visitors to feed the birds. Meanwhile, informative talks from the swanherd help explain more about the colony and answer any questions our visitors might have.
Families can also explore the living willow swan maze, a seasonal green space shaped like a giant swan, where the challenge is to find the egg at its centre! For younger visitors, the Brambly Hedge Summer Story Trail adds a storybook twist to a day outdoors; a gentle and imaginative way to explore the grounds.
