Abbotsbury Swannery

The Swannery Reopens

What to Expect in 2026

Abbotsbury Swannery has reopened for the season, welcoming visitors back to one of the most distinctive wildlife attractions on the Dorset coast.

The Swannery is the perfect spring day out, one surrounded by history, nature and the world’s only managed colony of nesting Mute Swans.

Indeed, spring is one of the most rewarding times of the year to visit, as the nesting season begins, the landscape shifts, and the whole site feels full of quiet activity.

A new season begins on the Fleet Lagoon

The Swannery returns to its daily visitor season, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Fleet Lagoon and the Jurassic Coast. The setting alone makes it one of the most peaceful places to visit in Dorset, but the real draw is the experience of walking through a site where swans live, nest and move freely around you.

At Abbotsbury, the swans are not kept in pens or enclosed lakes. They are free-flying birds, living in a landscape that has supported this remarkable colony for centuries. That unique sense of openness shapes the visit from the moment you arrive. There is space to slow down, take in the spectacular views, and watch the birds' natural behaviour up close. An experience like no other.

Nesting season brings new life across the site

Spring at the Swannery is closely tied to the nesting season. Over 100 breeding pairs of Mute Swans are beginning to establish territories and build nests, creating a truly fascinating spectacle. The nests appear across the site in close proximity to one another, and just one of the things that makes Abbotsbury so unique.

The first eggs usually appear by the end of March, with most incubation occurring in April. By early May, the first cygnets begin to hatch, and by late June, the hatching season is complete. The seasonal rhythm is part of what gives the Swannery its character. No two visits feel the same, and there is always something new to notice as the weeks roll on.

Returning favourites for the 2026 season

There’s plenty to experience on your visit to the Swannery. The daily mass swan feeds return, allowing visitors to watch the Swannery team arrive with feed and invite volunteers to help. The feeds are one of the highlights of the day, with commentary from the team, who share more about the swans and life at the Swannery.

The living willow swan maze is open once again. Crafted in the shape of a giant swan and made from living willow, it changes gently through the seasons and offers a fun extra element for children and families. Reaching the woven egg at the centre has become a favourite part of many visits!

The café and gift shop will also be open daily. Homemade light snacks, cakes, drinks and a selection of local beer and cider are available, alongside gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options. The gift shop offers toys, books, stationery and souvenirs that round off the visit nicely. Free parking, the playground and pedal go-karts, weather permitting, all add to the day.

Brambly Hedge Trail

What’s new at the Swannery for 2026

One of the main highlights for families this year is the Brambly Hedge Interactive and Story Trail, running daily until 1st November 2026. This season’s trail is based on The High Hills and is accompanied by a story trail inspired by Sea Story, guiding visitorsthrough the Swannery with interactive elements woven into the experience.

Designed with families in mind, the trail includes activities, stamp points and questions to answer as children move around the grounds. It is a great way for children to explore the site, while still keeping the swans and the setting at the heart of the visit. After the trail, families can continue the experience in the café with colouring sheets, and in the gift shop with a selection of Brambly Hedge books and gifts.

The Swannery Food & Craft Fair

Looking ahead: dates to add to your diary

The Swannery Food & Craft Fair takes place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2026. Alongside the usual Swannery experience, visitors can enjoy Dorset Food and Drink curated food and craft stalls and, with good timing, the chance to see the new cygnets of 2026.

The event adds a lively seasonal feel to the Swannery and is likely to appeal to families, local visitors and holidaymakers already planning places to visit in Dorset over the bank holiday.
