Spring at the Swannery

Nesting Season and the Arrival of Fluffy Cygnets

Spring is a special time here at Abbotsbury Swannery

The peaceful banks of the Fleet Lagoon come to life with over 100 pairs of nesting Mute Swans, and soon after, the site fills with the gentle cheeping and fluffy grey feathers of newly-hatched cygnets.

So, if you’re planning a family day out in Dorset, few experiences compare to witnessing this rare spectacle unfold.

Nature up close

From the end of March through to late June, the Swannery offers visitors a rare opportunity to see Mute Swans nesting in large numbers; this highly unusual colonial style of nesting makes Abbotsbury the only place of its kind in the world.

During your visit, you can follow well-marked paths through the reedbeds and open spaces, spotting swans sitting on nests just feet away. Keep an eye out for the first signs of hatching, with tiny cygnets often visible as early as May.

It's a wonderful way to introduce young visitors to the rhythms of the natural world – and a great chance to take some truly beautiful photos.

Daily feeds and expert commentary

Meet the Swannery team

To make the most of your visit, don’t miss the mass feeding times at midday and 4pm, where families can help feed the swans under the guidance of the Swannery team. Feeding sessions are accompanied by live commentary from the Swanherd or staff, who share fascinating insights into the swans’ behaviour, diet, and care.

Visitors of all ages can learn more about how the colony is managed and discover how the team keeps track of the birds through unique ID rings — building a life history for each swan from the moment they hatch.

Perfect for families, schools, and nature lovers

A spring day out to remember

If you're a local or just visiting Dorset, spring is one of the best times to experience the Swannery. Children love spotting cygnets, exploring the willow swan maze, and taking part in the Brambly Hedge Trail, which adds plenty of storybook charm to the landscape.

With acres of open space to explore, engaging learning opportunities, and seasonal wildlife on display, the Swannery is always high on the list for recommended days out in Dorset – particularly for school trips or family groups looking to mix fun with education.
