A Family Day Out at Abbotsbury Swannery

May half-term is a wonderful time to experience the magic of Abbotsbury Swannery. With the nesting season in full swing, the first fluffy grey cygnets are beginning to hatch, offering an unforgettable sight for visitors. Open daily, the grounds provide the perfect coastal day out for families looking to create lasting memories on the Dorset shore.

Meanwhile, The Swannery Food & Craft Fair takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, bringing Dorset Food and Drink curated stalls to the site for two days of local produce, crafts and seasonal treats.

For families searching for events in Dorset, May half-term activities, or family days out along the Jurassic Coast, Abbotsbury Swannery offers a day shaped by wildlife, fresh air, local food and a setting found nowhere else in the world.

May half-term at the Swannery

By late May, the Swannery is full of life. Spring nesting season is one of the most remarkable times in the Swannery calendar, with over 100 breeding pairs of Mute Swans establishing territories, building nests and raising their young within close reach of the visitor pathways.

The first eggs usually appear by the end of March, with most incubation occurring in April. By early May, the first cygnets begin to hatch, and throughout May and June, visitors have the chance to see the newest arrivals as they take their first steps around the colony.

It is a wonderful time for children to see nature up close. The swans walk freely around the site, moving effortlessly between their nests, the Fleet Lagoon, and the open pathways. This rare connection lets families observe the birds entirely in their own environment. At the same time, visitors gain a unique insight into how the colony is protected and cared for by the dedicated Swanherd and the Swannery team.

Swannery Food & Craft Fair

The Swannery Food & Craft Fair returns this May Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May. It promises a spectacular Dorset day out, blending exceptional regional flavours and artisan talent with open-air adventure.

Curated by Dorset Food and Drink, the market showcases a selection of local makers right within the historic grounds. Visitors can browse unique crafts, sample delicious seasonal food, and enjoy a complete family experience with the nesting swans, fluffy cygnets, and scenic walking trails nearby.

Daily swan feeds

A visit to Abbotsbury Swannery is best planned around one of the daily mass swan feeds, which take place at midday and 4 pm. The Swannery team arrive with wheelbarrows and scoops, inviting willing visitors to help feed the swans.

For children, this is often one of the most exciting parts of the day. For adults, it is a rare chance to stand close to the colony and hear commentary from the team, who share more about the swans, their behaviour, the site and the work involved in caring for them.

The feeds are also a good opportunity to ask questions. Visitors often want to know what swans eat, how long they live, who owns them and why Abbotsbury is such an important place for nesting Mute Swans. The team’s commentary helps bring the whole visit together, adding context to the birds and the surrounding landscape.

Brambly Hedge Trail

The Brambly Hedge Interactive and Story Trail

The Brambly Hedge Interactive and Story Trail runs daily until 31st October 2026, making it a lovely addition to a May half-term visit. Brambly Hedge and the Swannery have teamed up to create a trail designed especially for children and families, bringing together storytelling, hands-on activities and time spent exploring the Swannery grounds.

The interactive trail is based on The High Hills book, following Wilfred and Mr Apple on a journey that leads to an unexpected adventure. Alongside this, visitors can enjoy a story trail based on Sea Story from the Brambly Hedge collection.

The trail includes interactive activities, stamp points and questions to answer, guiding families around the Swannery while encouraging children to look more closely at the world around them. After the trail, families can head to the café for colouring sheets, while the gift shop features a selection of Brambly Hedge books and gifts.
